When I try to change the color of the background all of them change. I do not have them all highlighted and I hadn't selected all. Why is it doing this and how can I change the color of just one slide at a time?

Shelly -
Get/find a picture of the background image and slip that into the layers list with the other images on that slide. (That's the section between the Transition and the Background.) In that section of the slide you can edit the picture without disturbing the background slide.
